Marine fish and the global carbon cycle
Marine ray-finned fish make significant contributions to carbonate production each year. In order to stay hydrated in seawater, marine fish must maintain and internal salt and water balance. To accomplish this, they produce magnesium-rich carbonate minerals called ichthyocarbonate, which play a signficant role in the global oceanic carbonate budget.
