The Oehlert Research Group is located in the Department of Marine Geosciences at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science at the University of Miami.
Our research integrates sedimentological, geochemical, and geobiological perspectives in order to understand changes in biogeochemical cycles and environmental conditions throughout Earth history. Our main areas of focus include the formation and diagenetic alteration of marine carbonates, especially those produced by marine fish, and the interplay between physical, chemical, and biological processes that form carbonate and evaporite minerals in extreme environments like the Atacama Desert. |
Announcement:
Congratulations! Jadon and Sydney were awarded SURGE scholarships for their bachelor's thesis research! PhD Assistantship Opportunity We aim to better understand the role of marine fish carbonate in the global carbon cycle. The selected student will conduct a geochemical characterization of ichthyocarbonate using convergent research approaches from geology, chemical oceanography, and fish physiology. Interested applicants can potentially begin as early as January 2024. For more information, check out our assistantship announcement here and our recent paper on the project in Physiology. |
